As much as I dislike the puff of air blown in my eye to test for glaucoma, I’m glad my Indiana eye doctor checks for it during my annual eye exam.
Even though the process is completely painless (the testing instrument never actually touches your eye), I still can barely sit still. The “puff-of-air” test is the most common way to test for glaucoma. According to AllAboutVision.com, based on your eye’s resistance to the puff of air, the machine calculates your intraocular pressure (IOP). If you have high eye pressure, you may be at risk for or have glaucoma.
A glaucoma test is an essential part of your eye exam. Margaret visited Dr. Tavel Family Eye Care in Greenwood, Indiana and shares about her husband’s experience:
“I believe Dr. Tavel saved my husband’s eyesight by urging him to be tested further for glaucoma even though the signs were slight. Best. Advise. Ever. The glaucoma turned out to be much more advanced than it appeared. If the staff hadn’t been as good as they are the glaucoma might have gone undetected and caused loss of vision. Instead, my husband got the needed surgery to prevent permanent damage.”
That’s not the first time I’ve heard a story like that. Just recently I was told about an instance where Dr. Tavel diagnosed a young boy with a brain tumor during an eye exam. The boy visited a specialist the very next day and immediately went into surgery. Having an eye exam detected something no one knew …and it saved his life!
