We are all familiar with the age-old phrase “mom knows best”. When it comes to eye care, it looks like she may have been right. Carrots and other foods have actually been proven to protect and enhance eye health.
The National Eye Institute has designated nutrients that help protect and preserve eye health such as beta-carotene, vitamin C, vitamin E, vitamin A, and omega-3 fats. Eating healthy foods high in these nutrients can be a simple way to take care of your eyes.
Today Health provides a quick overview of three foods that can supercharge your eyes:

The beta-carotene and vitamin A found in carrots can help maintain good vision. It is important to recognize that 5% of beta-carotene is released in raw carrots. To enhance the amount of this nutrient, you can cook, pulp, or add cooking oil to the carrots. Munching on this healthy snack can help prevent macular degeneration and cataracts.
Sweet Potatoes
Yep, you guessed it, another large dose of beta-carotene is found in these scrumptious spuds. Sweet potatoes may not be your go-to veggie unless it is Thanksgiving, but there are many fun and yummy ways to prepare them. Baked, mashed, or even sweet potato fries are a healthy addition to your eye-conscious diet.
Omega-3 Fats
The transparent covering over your eye is filled with little blood vessels and it is important to keep them from bursting. One way you can do this is by getting your daily dose of omega-3 fats. Studies have shown that regularly eating foods rich in omega-3 fats can help protect the blood vessels buried within the eyes. Salmon and sardines are your best choices for this nutrient.
