The Low Down On Eye Health: Presbyopia

I recently had a birthday.  Birthdays are a wonderful time to celebrate with family and friends and also reflect on how a year was spent.  I had a lot of things change in the past year with my graduation from college, my move to Indianapolis and beginning life on my own.  Our health can also change a lot within a year as our body ages and reacts accordingly.  While my health remained virtually unchanged, I know this always won’t be the case.

One such change generally occurs in almost 95% of the population as we approach 40 years of age, although it may occur earlier or later.  Somehow, our arms seem to get too short and we no longer are able to read that fine (and not so fine) print.  The reason (according to Indiana eye doctors) has to do with the loss of elasticity within the lens of the eye, causing us to no longer focus as easily.

This change is called presbyopia.  And, from a practical standpoint, it means we need help reading!  Indianapolis eye doctors, like Dr. Tavel, help patients with presbyopia who have trouble focusing on objects within reading distance every day. There are a multitude of options including bifocals, progressive lenses or readers.  There is even a contact lens option as well!

The solution?  Eye examinations by Indiana eye doctors, like Dr. Tavel, can detect presbyopia and fix it with some of the solutions above.

Although I don’t have signs of presbyopia yet I know how to keep my eyes healthy each year (around my birthday!) and get an eye examination from Dr. Tavel.  With weekend and evening hours I am sure to always be able to get in to see an Indianapolis eye doctor like Dr. Tavel himself or one of his board certified associates.  Presbyopia…aging lenses in our eyes and that is your eye health low down!
